Focus area / Digital mining and responsible AI

Make mine data useful. Keep people in control.

Move from isolated digital pilots to secure, interoperable tools that operators can trust and maintain.

Why this focus

The opportunity behind the headline.

Digital pilots often stall because data access, integration, cyber risk and frontline adoption were not part of the original business case. AI adds model validation and oversight requirements.

Government of Canada context

The Pan-Canadian Artificial Intelligence Strategy connects commercialization, standards, talent and research. CEMI can translate that adoption agenda into mining-specific validation and buyer requirements.

Sources reviewed . Policy alignment is not program eligibility, government endorsement or a funding commitment. Check current terms directly with the responsible agency.

Our proposed response

What CEMI and MICA would bring.

CEMI / Challenge and evidence

Specify operational decisions, data requirements and acceptance tests; bring operations, IT, operational technology and workers into validation.

MICA / Route to market

Connect digital SMEs with customer discovery, integration partners and reference deployments that can support repeatable sales.

Proposed delivery roles only. Confirm MICA governance, active scope and available capacity for each engagement.

Where to start

Practical opportunities to explore.

Predictive maintenance

Test alerts against actual failure history, false positives and maintenance decisions rather than model accuracy alone.

Interoperable operations

Validate data exchange and integration with existing equipment and workflows before expanding a pilot.

Responsible decision support

Use shadow-mode trials, human review, drift monitoring and clear limits on model use.

Proposed first engagement

Shadow-mode digital deployment

See all five delivery gates
Practical output
A data-use agreement, integration and cyber review, operational validation report and monitored rollout/rollback plan.
Area-specific decision gate
Move into production only after the operator approves security, human oversight, failure handling and a measured advantage over the baseline.

Evidence, not promises

How we would measure progress.

Agree baselines, targets, measurement methods and reporting permissions before work starts. These are proposed measures, not achieved results.

  • Unplanned downtime (hours) and maintenance cost ($) versus baseline
  • False-alarm and missed-event rates using representative operating data
  • Sustained user adoption (%) and integration cost ($), with a stated reporting period

Responsible delivery

Boundaries that matter.

No autonomous safety-critical control on the strength of a prototype. Require operator authorization, qualified safety review, least-privilege access and explicit data/IP agreements; protect worker privacy.

For the first conversation, bring the problem or community-defined priority, your role, available evidence and the decision you need to make. Do not send confidential technical data, sensitive community information or Indigenous knowledge through the public inquiry form.
