Steve is currently a mine engineer at Nutrien’s Cory Potash mine working as the site rock mechanics lead. Prior to joining Nutrien Steve worked for Cameco Corporation working at their various northern mining operations in roles including rock mechanics, ventilation, and mine planning.\n\nAway from work Steve enjoys spending time with his active family. The majority of his time is spent coaching his three children in their sports including hockey, baseball, football and lacrosse.\n\nJason Lau, P.Eng., Automation Specialist, Nutrien Cory Potash\n\nJason earned his Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering from the University of Saskatchewan in 2014. He began his career in IT consulting focusing on computer networking and IT infrastructure designs. Throughout his IT career, he has earned multiple vendor certifications with majority in Cisco, Dell EMC. Jason has also worked in multiple Nutrien Potash location including Rocanville, Allan, Vanscoy(remote) and eventually at Cory. Jason began his role at Cory as an IT analyst with a focus on networking. He eventually moved on and joined the Automation team in 2021. Until today, Jason has worked closely with operators and has been heavily involved with the Tele-Remote project and thus, gaining him knowledge on underground operation workflows, ground controls, PLC/HMI programming and project management.\n\nOutside of his professional life, Jason enjoys spending time with his dog and his family as well as traveling to different countries and learning about different cultures.\n\nPresentation Information\nNutrien Cory – Potash Mining and Tele-Remote Advancements\n\nAdvancements in potash rock mechanics understanding and stress relief mining practices have progressively made our industry safer. Serious injury or fatality incidents have decreased over the decades of potash mining, but still exist due to the dynamic nature of the mining process and the human interaction with mining equipment.\n\nA desire for improving safety and advancements in technologies has led Nutrien down a path of creating a better mining process. Through multi-functional collaboration within Nutrien’s potash network autonomous mining technologies are being developed and implemented. The Tele-Remote mining project at the Nutrien Cory mine is the next step for Nutrien towards developing safer mining operations.\n\nThis presentation will review Saskatchewan’s potash deposits and how the geology of the ore zone has impacted the mining method utilized at Nutiren’s Cory Potash mine. We will then discuss the technologies utilized to achieve Tele-Remote Mining at Nutrien Cory Potash mine. By using various sensors, each technology works together to integrate and enable effective Tele-Remote Mining. Tele-remote mining has shown positive outcomes in improving safety and production efficiency, providing a sustainable and scalable solution while also decreasing maintenance issues."
